The New York Knicks completed their long road trip with a 101-92 victory over the Indiana Pacers. The end score does not reflect how close this game got down the stretch.

The game began with both teams struggling to score. Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby carried the offense through the first quarter, while the absence of Josh Hart and Karl-Anthony Towns left the second unit without its typical advantages. But New York woke up in the second quarter, building a double-digit lead.

The team fell back into a stupor in the third quarter, allowing the Pacers to cut into the lead and make a comeback. Indiana briefly took a one-point lead in the fourth quarter, but the familiar tandem of Brunson and Anunoby made plays to reclaim the lead. Mitchell Robinson’s rebounding helped seal the win for the Knicks.

The Pacers brought back players who had recently sat, while the depleted Knicks added KAT to their list of resting players but still managed to win. Let’s check out how New York held on with the player performances.

Notable Performances

Two stars carry the understaffed roster

Jalen Brunson: 29 PTS (11/25 FG, 0/3 3PT, 7/8 FT), 9 AST, 5 REB, 1 STL, 2 TO in 37 mins

The Pacers didn’t send the doubles that Jalen Brunson saw for most of the road trip, at least not until it was too late. He dropped 11 points in the first quarter and proceeded to give the Knicks a scoring boost whenever the Pacers threatened to steal the game.

When Indiana made shifts to contain the Captain, he made quick, decisive passes. That helped OG get going and created clutch three-pointers for teammates down the stretch.

OG Anunoby: 25 PTS (8/16 FG, 2/4 3PT, 7/9 FT), 5 AST, 8 REB, 2 TO in 34 mins

OG attacked the basket with reckless abandon, dunking the rock and forming surprisingly good chemistry with Mitchell Robinson. Anunoby served as a perfect weakside complement to Jalen Brunson, punishing Indiana’s defenders for leaning too far toward the Captain.

Anunoby’s defense was a step above everyone else, and he made an impact as a rebounder and playmaker. He played a complete game with impressive results.

The most important part of the supporting cast

Mitchell Robinson: 12 PTS, 22 REB, 2 STL, 2 BLK, 3 TO in 31 mins

Mitchell Robinson was an absolute force in his start for the Knicks. He had 11 rebounds by halftime and a double-double after the first possession of the third quarter. He powered his way to any spot on the floor he wanted.

Best of all, Mitch played a season-high in minutes and remained effective throughout that period. It’s a great sign for his health.

Jordan Clarkson: 8 PTS (3/9 FG, 2/5 3PT), 2 AST, 2 REB, 1 STL, 1 BLK, 2 TO in 19 mins

This wasn’t Jordan Clarkson’s best night, but he played a crucial role as a bench scorer. He scored twice as much as the next high scorer from the second unit.

Clarkson’s downhill work made a big difference in spite of an inefficient night. He also hustled, making an impact defensively and chasing rebounds despite his low tally at the end of the game.

Didn’t shoot well but still came up big

Mikal Bridges: 11 PTS (4/9 FG, 1/4 3PT, 2/3 FT), 4 REB, 1 TO in 30 mins

A clutch three-pointer helped Mikal Bridges hit double-figures for the first time since recent struggles began. But Bridges still felt a step behind his typical offensive flow. His jumper isn’t as sure-thing as it is at his best.

Bridges defended well as usual, but his production was surprisingly low across the board.

Landry Shamet: 9 PTS (2/7 FG, 2/7 3PT, 3/5 FT), 5 REB in 37 mins

The experiment of starting Landry Shamet hasn’t produced big results yet. He shot poorly despite getting good looks throughout this game.

With the looks Shamet got against Indiana, it’s only a matter of time before he has a big night. But he hasn’t found that rhythm yet.

More Notes

  • Once again, Mo Diawara flashed impressive plays off the dribble, beating Indiana’s big men to the rim. But Mo’s shot hasn’t been as effective as usual lately.

  • This felt like an opportunity for Jose Alvarado to get back into a rhythm, but he had another quiet night.

  • I’m disappointed by Ariel Hukporti’s recent play. Pacome Dadiet showed more by making a logo jumper against a low shot clock.

Closing Thoughts

Well, that wasn’t exactly pretty, but the Knicks got the dub. The team seemed to drag through the second half of the road trip, and more players hit the injury report with each stop. But that created opportunities for others step up and shine.

Mitchell Robinson turned his start into a 20-rebound effort, and Jordan Clarkson may have played his way back into rotation minutes. Meanwhile, Josh Hart and Karl-Anthony Towns have gotten some extra rest without costing the team in the win column.

The schedule stays soft a while longer. This is when the Knicks can hopefully make their place in the standings firm, and still find opportunities to give fatigued players breaks. I’ll see you next time, Knicks fam!
